First of all, I’m not a vocal critic- just a casual listener and hardcore Sone.
If you’re thinking “Yuri deserved better blah blah blah”, I want you to know that I agree with you. But, unfortunately, this year she didn’t get to show off her vocals and didn’t have any music project aside from SNSD’s (whose real lives lacked in quantity this year), which is why she ended up in that position.
I thought Yoona and Sooyoung both really improved musically this year and deserved to be in higher positions. Tiffany and Seohyun continue to grow and obtain more and more control as the years go by and are definitely cementing their positions at the top.
Although Jessica did improve her quality from these past solos years (and by that I mean that in 2015-16 she used a lot of loud backtrack and quite honestly, went off tune a lot), her lack of consistency resulted on the tie. Sunny on the other hand… what a way to recover that energy, girl! I’m so proud of her and definitely wish to see more of that lovely yet powerful voice soon.
And Taeyeon? *inserts ironic voice* Who could’ve seen that coming? lol

This is complitely objective (not so much for the 4 subvocalists) based on their vocal technique.

Taeyeon has always been the best but has actually improved the most. Her lower register doesnt completely sucks now and her mix and resonance is even better

Jessica has always stayed the same, she did improved in very few things but also regressed in a few things. She’s always been inconsistent but overall her technique hasn’t changed. Strong chest voice and balanced but inconsistent mix.

Seohyun improved quite a lot in her breathing, head voice and the support in her upper mix.

Sunny hasn’t change a bit. Great head voice, ok mix, terrible chest voice.

Tiffany improved a lot, in their early years she was very breathy (her classic “husky” sound) now her aproach is more supported and relaxed. she still pushes and yells in her upper mix tho.

Yuri regresed considerably. Out of the sub vocalists she was the only one with some sense of weak support in the chest and mixed voice. Now she whispers every sound that comes out of her mouth.

Sooyoung improved a little bit in the proyection in her mix and now has some weak support in the head voice. She still often sings flat and pitchy with a very woobly voice.

Hyoyeon hasn’t change much. Terrible upper register and unsupported chest and mix. Her chest voice inproved a bit.

Yoona improved a little in her proyection but still unsupported in every way.

  2. This is not gonna change. We all know that Taeyeon, (Jessica), Seohyun, Tiffany, Sunny, Sooyoung, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Yoona, <— these are forever and always their order of singing skill. Why i seen lot of this kind of videos, lol.

  3. Yes totally agreed. Yoona, Sooyoung and Seohyeon improved a lot. But Jessica’s voice still good, but she lost the charm and attraction when she was in snsd.
